Title:
„Ecodesign: the new way to analyze wild and design urban plantings“ – plant design masterclass by James Hitchmough and Giacomo Guzzon.
Program:
“The wild as inspiration for designed urban plantings”, prof. James Hitchmough (UK)
Natural and semi-natural plantings in what we colloquially refer to as the “wild” are a powerful source of understanding for planting designers. They show what is ecologically possible, provide many insights into how habitats shape what plants are sustainable under those conditions and how the same understandings can be applied to the “unnatural” habitats of cities. Perhaps most importantly the wild often provides moments of sublime beauty that can inspire new ways of thinking about and designing urban plantings.
„Ecology and Esthetics: creating balance in design“ Giacomo Guzzon (Italy / UK)
Giacomo discuss the design of planting schemes in the public realm and communal areas. The focus is on creating resilient and aesthetically pleasing plant communities in urban environments while considering and amplifying the character, mood, and genius loci of each site. He looks first at principles for grouping and designing with plants, then relevant precedents that show an ecological approach in planting design and finally talk about a few projects he has been involved in.
The second lecture of Giacomo is a planting design exercise where you can see the process how he layouts plant in a particular plot.
